Why Product Architecture has to come before configuration

A configurator is only as good as the structure underneath it. When a product line has grown for years without a deliberate architecture, adding a CPQ tool on top does not remove the complexity, it just makes invalid combinations easier to generate.

Design Structure Matrix (DSM), Domain Mapping Matrix (DMM) and Multi-Domain Matrix (MDM) methods exist precisely to make that underlying structure visible before anyone starts building rules on top of it. The output is not a report, it is a defensible model of how the product actually decomposes.

Skipping this step is the single most common reason CPQ implementations under-deliver: the tool works exactly as configured, and the configuration reflects a structure nobody validated.
